Here at the Salon 123, we’re big fans of dogs. In fact, there’s usually one or two chilling out with the staff. They are always on the lookout for a cuddle and a fuss. And the reason we’re sharing this with you? It’s because we want to talk to you about the benefits of pets.

Lowers blood pressure 

Did you know owning a pet can lower your blood pressure? A study carried out in America showed that pet owners were more likely to have low blood pressure than a person without a pet. This is probably because owning a pet brings pleasure and therefore has a calming effect when they are around. Have you ever come home from work in a bad temper? I bet you never take it out on the dog.

Improves your immune system

Studies have shown that owning a dog can improve your immune system. This is because dogs carry around a certain amount of bacteria which gets passed on to us dog owners. This bacteria helps to keep our immune systems strong.

Get out and about

If you own a dog you need to take it for a walk. Dogs not only need to get out of the house to be exercised, but they also need mental stimulation. Watch a dog next time you’re in the park. They are alert to everything around them and they love to explore. People are the same. We need exercise and mental stimulation. Walking a dog is a good way to stop your mind racing. You can relax and enjoy being outdoors.

Helps to combat loneliness

When you’re walking your dog, you’ll meet other dog walkers. You might just say a brief hello, or stop for a chat by the park bench. You can also join a pet’s club if there’s one in your area. It’s a good way to meet other owners of dogs, cats or birds. 

Getting the benefits without being a dog owner

If you like the idea of walking a dog, but you don’t want to own a dog, or you can’t, there is a solution. Get in touch with your local dog’s home and ask them if they need volunteer dog walkers. Many of them do. It’s a great way to make a new friend and get plenty of exercise.
