What Causes Uneven Skin Tone?

Uneven Skin Tone

The team at Salon 123 Beauty Salon in Herne Bay Kent discuss What Causes Uneven Skin Tone?

Uneven skin tone is caused by the production of too much melanin. The scientific name for this is hyperpigmentation.

Melanin

Melanin is the pigment that determines your skin and hair colour. If your body produces too much melanin you will develop dark patches or ‘age spots’ which you’ll commonly notice on your face and the back of your hands.

Sun damage

One of the most common causes of hyperpigmentation is sun damage. Melanin works to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. If you regularly go out in the sun without the protection of sun cream your melanin production will go into overdrive and that’s how you end up with sun-damaged skin.

Injury

Another cause of hyperpigmentation is skin injury or scarring, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

If surgery has injured your skin or you have cuts or burns the skin will begin to repair itself. Skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and acne can also cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Intense Pulsed Light Treatment

The good news is we can help! Intense Pulsed Light Treatment (IPL) is similar to laser therapy, but it can  also specifically target problems like sun damage.  It uses pulses of light energy to break down the areas of pigmentation. It is a fast, non-invasive treatment that will improve the appearance of age spots and dark patches.

Microdermabrasion

Another treatment you can have is Microdermabrasion. This will exfoliate your skin. It uses a device that uses tiny crystals to gently exfoliate away dead skin cells on your skin’s upper layer. It helps improve the appearance of dark patches and age spots. Regular sessions performed every 7-10 days will leave your skin looking healthy and youthful throughout the new decade!
